Trade stimulants for internal drive
Details:
Jamie Foxx shared on The Tim Ferriss Show that he cut out caffeine completely. No coffee, no energy drinks, nothing. At first, it sounds extreme, right? But his reason was simple: he didn’t want his energy to be dependent on something outside of him.
He wanted to wake up and know, “If I need to perform today — whether it’s acting, making music, or showing up for my kids — that drive has to come from me.”
Now, this doesn’t mean you have to quit coffee tomorrow. It’s about becoming aware of when you’re leaning on quick fixes instead of building your own fuel. Here’s how you can make it work in your life:
- Notice the autopilot reach. Next time you’re about to grab that third coffee or slam an energy drink, pause for five seconds. Ask yourself: “Am I actually tired, or am I just bored or unmotivated?”
- Switch the spark. Instead of external energy, try something internal — a quick walk, cold water on your face, one minute of deep breathing, or putting on a song that always lifts you. These are mini “internal ignition switches.”
- Reserve stimulants as tools, not crutches. Jamie treats his natural energy like a skill to train, not a resource to hack.
When you practice relying on your own baseline, your body learns to regulate itself better.
The bigger point? When your energy depends on you and not a cup of coffee, you feel more in control. You stop being at the mercy of a latte, and you start trusting your own reserves. That’s real discipline — and it spills into everything: work, workouts, relationships, even confidence.
