The Action List

Think of true discipline as cheerful, willing, voluntary obedience instead of punishment.

The note by my lamp reads: 'You chose this run while you were calm; honour that version of you.'

Discipline, Jocko Willink says, isn’t a whip but a vote you cast in advance. So take a blank page and write - by hand - why this task matters: the 5k you keep skipping, the novel you “never have time” for. List the payoff, the cost of inaction, and how you'll and others will benefit when you finish. Read that note each morning until it stops sounding inspirational and starts sounding like marching orders you gave yourself. No more bargaining. No reluctant shuffling. Discipline shifts from punishment to a polite nod toward priorities set when your head was clear. Harder to wriggle out of, and infinitely kinder.
