We make life harder than it needs to be. Every time you want to start something — a new project, a fitness routine, even a side idea — your brain piles on conditions: you need the right gear, more research, a full strategy, a free weekend.

By the time it feels “ready,” the spark is gone.

Tim Ferriss uses a question to slice through that perfectionist noise:

👉 “What would this look like if it were easy?”

It sounds too simple, but it’s a total mental unlock. The question shifts your brain from “how do I make this perfect?” to “how do I just get this moving?”

The principle / idea:

The “easy test” forces you to zoom out. It’s not about being lazy — it’s about removing friction. Most of the time, “easy” means clear, simple, and doable today.

It trains you to focus on the smallest next action that actually matters — the one that gets you feedback, progress, or momentum.

Why it works:

It reduces overwhelm. Your brain loves simplicity. When you strip away unnecessary steps, your focus (and dopamine) rebounds.

It builds momentum. Finishing something small beats overthinking something big. Progress creates motivation, not the other way around.

It stops perfectionism in its tracks. Asking what’s “easy” reframes success from flawless execution to forward movement — a massive psychological shift.

Why it’s difficult:

We equate “hard” with “worthy.” Our culture glamorises hustle and complexity, so doing something simple can feel like cheating. But easy doesn’t mean effortless — it means efficient.

How to try it:

Start with the question. Before beginning a task or project, literally ask out loud: “If this were easy, what would it look like?”

Simplify one layer. Cut one step, one meeting, or one tool. Usually, that’s all it takes to get unstuck.

Run the test in real life:

Work: Instead of building a 20-slide deck, outline your idea in one clear email.

Fitness: Don’t plan a 60-minute gym session — commit to a 10-minute walk after lunch.

Side project: Don’t design the perfect website — post one idea on LinkedIn and see how people respond.

Home life: Instead of a total kitchen overhaul, fix the drawer that annoys you every morning.

Repeat the question. Every time something starts to feel heavy or complicated — pause, breathe, ask again.
