Live as your future self now
Details:
James Clear (Atomic Habits) says it best: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” And those systems are built on identity - who you believe you are.
If you still see yourself as “someone who’s bad with money” or “a person who always quits,” no amount of goal-setting will stick. Living as your future self means becoming the person who naturally does the things that create your desired life.
When you choose the identity of your future self - and start making daily decisions from that place - your actions align without forcing discipline. You’re not “trying” to be them. You are them.
How to Do It:
1. Define Your Future Self
Write a clear statement of who you are becoming:
“I’m a calm and confident leader.”
“I’m a disciplined investor.”
2. Ask, ‘What Would Future Me Do?’
Before decisions, pause for 5 seconds (Mel Robbins style) and check in:
Would Future Me hit snooze or get up?
Would Future Me spend this, or save for the bigger vision?
3. Take Daily Aligned Actions
Small steps count — send the email, take the walk, say no to what’s not aligned.
4. Collect Proof
Keep a “Future Me” journal where you note moments you acted in character.
Why It Works:
Your brain acts in line with the story it believes about you
Identity-based habits are more sustainable than relying on willpower
Each action is a vote for your new self-image
